BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Birmingham police are investigating an incident that occurred at Topgolf in Birmingham Sunday night.

Investigators say the business went on temporary lockdown after someone fired shots in the area.

A spokesperson for Topgolf says this is an active investigation and is working closely with BPD. WBRC spoke with Birmingham City Councilman Hunter Williams, who says gun violence is a problem in our communities, but officers are working hard to keep places like these safe.

“Well, I frequent that area, or go to that area; is my safety at risk when I do it?” Williams asks.

Williams serves on the city’s public safety board and says these are questions neighbors have as gun violence continues to be a problem in our community, especially in our entertainment districts.

“These incidents, for the most part, are isolated targeted incidents where we have people who have come to a particular place that is in dispute that is stemming from an illegal activity or they are going somewhere to carry out an illegal activity such as buying narcotics,” Williams. explain.

Birmingham police are working to identify a suspect. The suspect is said to have fired on a group of men. An occupied vehicle was hit, but no one was shot. All this happened around 17:40

No one is in custody.

Williams says neighbors shouldn’t be afraid to come out.

“You have situational awareness of where you are and where you park. Is it well lit? Are you in an area where you feel safe to get to and from? And also don’t expose yourself to unnecessary risks. If you’re meeting to do something illegal, obviously you’re putting yourself at unnecessary risk,” says Williams.

Top Golf shared the following statement which reads in part:

“Rest assured that the safety of our players and our players has been and continues to be of the utmost importance to all of our locations around the globe.”
