Belgian Days brings cross-cultural cuisine and art to Hong Kong and Macau

Delicious fusions of Belgian and Cantonese cuisine, genre-bending music events and the occasional smurf are all on the menu for this year’s Belgium Days. The eclectic celebration runs from November 9-17, with events in both Hong Kong and Macau.

The Consul General of Belgium in Hong Kong, David Lomastro, says the festival aims to provide “Belgian artists and local creators in Hong Kong with an exceptional platform to showcase their artistic and culinary heritage in a way that reflects the diversity of these regions “.

For those who prefer people-to-people diplomacy on a plate, Belgian chef Alexandre Ciriello, who was named Gault & Millau Young Chef of the Year 2023 for Wallonia, is set to showcase the rich but little-known flavors and techniques of his country’s cuisine in his creations such as Roscoff crab with sea urchin tongues and Osciètre caviar.

For a liquid take on Belgian culture, turn to seasoned mixologist Sergio Pezzoli, who will serve up his award-winning Strawberry Night cocktail, which includes a mix of vanilla vodka, passion fruit liqueur, apple liqueur and fresh strawberry juice.

On November 12, the Broadway Cinematheque will host a cross-cultural collaboration between students from the INSAS film school in Brussels and graduates from the Hong Kong Baptist University Film Academy. Two short films will be screened, followed by discussions with their creators. Film Academy director Ellen Seiter is ‘extremely proud’ to see Chan Wing-ki graduates The rule of the game and Gary Wong King-chau’s River highlighted at the event. INSAS will be represented by Paul Vincent de Lestrade Breathe and Jialai Wang’s A Siesta.
