The Boston Red Sox are bringing back a versatile outfielder with a modest 2025 offer

after “flirty“Having retired earlier this season, Boston Red Sox shortstop Rob Refsnyder will return to the club in 2025.

The team announced they had picked up his club option on social media. He will earn just over $2 million.

There are a few reasons why this is exciting for the Red Sox moving forward. First, Refsnyder should remain a great platoon option for the team against lefties in 2025. He hit .302 against lefties in 2024 with eight home runs and 23 RBI. He’s done that damage in just 126 official at-bats and consistently hits in the top or middle of the order against southpaws.

Plus, the Red Sox now have a lot of players. The team currently has Refsnyder, Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu on the roster. Roman Anthony is also knocking on the door, and Tyler O’Neill still has the opportunity to receive a qualifying offer. There are also potential free agents like Teoscar Hernandez who could appeal to Boston.

While Refsnyder’s presence won’t necessarily drive roster decisions, the team certainly has flexibility to move an outfielder if it wants to acquire a starting pitcher, which it desperately needs. They could also move Refsnyder if they felt inclined. His contract is certainly very affordable for an acquiring team.

Now 33, Refsnyder spent nine years in the big leagues with the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Tampa Bay Rays, Minnesota Twins, Texas Rangers and Red Sox. He ended up in Boston in 2022, making it his longest tenure with any team.

All his life, he’s a .253 hitter.
