Munshiganj police have arrested seven members of a robbery gang who allegedly posed as police officers to steal Tk7 lakh and gold jewelery from a gold dealer.

The arrests were made in a joint operation by the local police and the detective branch (DB) at various locations in Munshiganj and Dhaka districts, Superintendent of Police Muhammad Shamsul Alam Sarkar told a press conference today (Nov 4 ).

The official said the police recovered Tk7 lakh in cash and a motorcycle used in the crime.

The arrested persons have been identified as Roni, 48, Sirajul Islam Javed, 42, Shamim, 42, Saimon, 32, Momin, 42, Sujar, 30, and Somir Hossain, 42. years.

According to the police, all are members of an inter-district robbery gang.

SP Shamsul Alam said that on October 23, the victim Ramprasad Halder, a gold trader, was returning to his house in Dhaka’s Bandura. After reaching the Moricha area on the Dhaka-Dohar road in Sirajdikhan, robbers boarded his bus, posed as police and forced him to alight, later robbing him of Tk7 ​​lakh and three tolas (about 35 grams) of gold jewelry.

Following a complaint lodged on the same day at the Sirajdikhan police station, the police started an investigation.

“Within 12 days, using technological assistance, the police managed to nab seven suspects from Munshiganj and Dhaka. During preliminary hearings, the inmates admitted their involvement. 7 lakh in cash and a motorcycle used in the robbery were seized based on their information,” said SP Shamsul Alam.

He noted that the suspects have several previous cases against them.

Police efforts are continuing to arrest the remaining suspects and recover the stolen valuables.

The detainees will be brought to court soon, he added.
