The Washington Chiefs are looking for a cornerback as Tuesday’s trade deadline approaches, per Dianna Russini from Athletic.

“It’s no surprise that the red-hot commanders in Washington are calling for a corner,” Russini wrote.

“Coach Dan Quinn knows this is a weakness on his roster, and at 6-2, Washington needs help if it wants to get past the Philadelphia Eagles and their superb group of receivers in the NFC East.”

The NFC East leaders are 6-2, a half game ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles, in their road game against the New York Giants on Sunday.

Ben Standig of The Athletic provided an update on the Chiefs’ activity at the Oct. 30 trade deadline, specifically mentioning the cornerback.

“Multiple league sources told The Athletic that they have heard little about Washington this deadline cycle or that the team is attached to any specific names. There is a willingness to listen, especially for a cornerback, according to another team’s front-office executive. , but it doesn’t have much of a sense that activity is developing.”

However, Standig made sure to take the long view, noting that this is “Year 1 of a multi-year plan focused on sustained contention rather than the pursuit of immediate gratification.”

The commanders are playing with the house money right now, after a surprising start. They haven’t won more than 10 games in a season since 1991. Washington needs to form a foundation for sustained excellence, and giving away any significant picks for another piece may not be the wisest choice in pursuit of that goal.

General manager Adam Peters has 10 draft picks in 2025, including four top-100 picks, per Standig. So there is a choice to burn, perhaps, but the question is whether this is a smart move for the future.

On the other hand, this team is special. Daniels is an electric talent who could develop into one of the league’s superstars for years to come. The Chiefs are very likely to move into a tie for first place in the NFC after Sunday. If there’s a chance to make a run for the Super Bowl, why not take it?

The captains also made waves elsewhere, with CBS Sports Jonathan Jones reporting that “Washington has looked to the wide receiver market to offer potential help to Terry McLaurin as it makes a playoff push.”

Finally, Washington could use more help in the backfield. The team allowed 6.3 net yards per pass attempt, ranking 22nd in the league, per Professional football reference.

And another wideout alongside McLaurin could be helpful. Only two wideouts (McLaurin and Noah Brown) have more than 176 receiving yards in eight games.

So the Commanders are clearly a team to watch as the deadline approaches. For now, they look to improve to 7-2 on the road against the 2-6 New York Giants on Sunday.
