BATHINDA: It’s a protest with a difference. A number of diplomas and certificates were placed in a pile of paddy in the yard of a house in the village of Peori, which falls in the Gidderbaha assembly segment, where the by-elections are to be held on November 13. In this protest Deepak Aziz seeks to raise two issues, harassment faced by farmers in selling paddy crop and undue delay in release. appointment letters and allotment of posts for 411 candidates for the post of Assistant professors in state government colleges in spite of a bank in Punjab and Haryana high court allowing their appeals over a month ago 3barring their recruitment.
Deepak is among 411 candidates out of 1158 assistant professors and librarians who failed to receive appointment letters despite completing the recruitment process before their appointment was canceled on August 8, 2022. After over two years, their recruitment resumed in September. 23, 2024, and from that day he is waiting for the state government to act on the high court’s orders.
Deepak and many others from 411 assistant teachers switched off their house lights on Diwali to cast it in darkness as a mark of protest against the state government. Although not all of them come from farming families like Deepak, whose family faces a double whammy.
“Over the years, my family worked hard to level the mound of dirt into arable land and added land to make 5 acres. Almost a week ago, we had harvested the crop, but with no more space in the buying center in our village, we preferred to unload it at our house and wait to sell it. As for staff, I am waiting for the appointment letter so that I can join others to teach in a government college,” said Depak, 26, while talking to TOI on Saturday. He said many like me are desperately waiting for appointment letters.
The 1158 assistant professors and librarians’ front staged a months-long protest in Gambhirpur village, home village of Punjab Higher Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, during which one of the assistant professors ended his life by suicide .
Punjab Govt in October 2021 they made appointments of 1091 assistant professors and 67 librarians taking a total of 1158 assistant professors and librarians for government colleges in the state. 124 teachers enrolled in colleges on December 21, 2021, while 483 received appointments but the posts were not allocated. The 484 assistant professors of which 411 are now without appointment and 67 librarians entered their names in the list of shortlisted candidates but could not be appointed. A dozen petitions were filed against these appointments on technical issues, including the appointment process. Single Bench of Punjab and Haryana High Court on 8th August 2022 canceled the recruitment. The assistant teachers filed appeals against the quashing order by a single bench in September 2022. The state government too filed an appeal against the quashing.
