Dagenham bagpipe band disbanded amid recruitment struggles

An all-female bagpipe band that has been playing for almost 100 years says it is breaking up as it struggles to recruit younger members.

According to Dagenham Girl Pipers, the girls no longer want to take up the bagpipes – their last performance will be on Remembrance Sunday.

Denise Morrison, who joined the east London band when she was nine, said the girls were “more into social media these days than the discipline of a band”.

They shared their stories with BBC London as they rehearsed for the last time at Valence House Museum in Barking.
