The price was the best for a quick lunch since we can remember, with sandwicheswraps and salads, all waiting to be taken.

But following the anger over subscription change (coffees without RIP)many have had to find somewhere else to go for lunch and there is one shop which has been hailed as a replacement for the chain in London.

Sandwiches Sandwichesa family business, has gone viral online, amassing over 200,000 followers on Instagram for its mammoth sarnies, which reviews claim are “the size of a small child” and can weigh up to a kilogram.

The original store is located in Bristolbut it has proved so successful that the owners have expanded with a store in London – and have just announced a second location in the capital, which is set to be the UK’s biggest sandwich shop.

According to their Instagram post, this new place will be “3500 sq ft of sandwich heaven” and will open in either December 2024 or January 2025.

Is it worth standing in line? Sandwich Sandwich officially opened in London in the last few weeks and we finally got a chance to visit. I have never waited an hour and a half for a table, not even at a restaurant, so the wait was sky high! Right off the bat, the Southern Fried Chicken is a clear winner. Lots of sauce, nice and hot, and all the bits were falling in all the right ways. The roast beef was solid, but I saw they had grab and go, no point in waiting if you can just walk in and get a pre-made one. Also, they didn’t cut our sandwiches in half for that lovely cross section, I guess you have to ask? The hot stack is very nice and you can skip the line for a hot meal order! Made with similar ingredients to the sandwiches, my only suggestion is to try and get some extra sauce to slather on. ) made for a treat after lunch. Also, to clarify: I didn’t eat all of this in one sitting, it was shared and enjoyed, a sandwich is more than just one person’s enjoyment. At £9 for most options, you’re good with just one. . . #SandwichSandwich #CityofLondon #OneCityLDN

Demand for their sandwiches has skyrocketed in London since they opened here earlier this year.

Queues form daily outside the Gresham Street venue, stretching into the road, with people waiting up to an hour for a £7.95 sandwich. The police even had to get involved to ensure a frenzy didn’t break out when customers were turned away at a particularly busy spot.

Lewis Capaldi is a fan Prue Leith is said to have been “tricked” by the roast beef sandwiches, and the team even managed to farm Gordon Ramsay.

Comments on social media claim the sandwiches, which include oversized versions of classics such as Coronation Chicken, All Day Breakfast and Egg Mayo, look “dreamy”, are “perfection” and people often compare them to works of “art”.

Are the Sandwich Bars really worth the hype?

I’ve been following the Sandwich Sandwich Instagram account for a while but had never been to Bristol, so naturally I was delighted when they announced the London store.

I was lucky enough to be one of the first customers through the doors and scores of people packed in to see the magic unfold behind an ice cream-style counter filled with meats, cheeses and salad.

The whole thing is pretty theatrical, as the staff do it all in front of you, reaching into mountains of coleslaw or gelato-style cream cheese and bringing back handfuls of the stuff, before rolling it up and shaping it to fit perfectly on the bread, then crushing it. down above.

It’s a unique approach, but also a little disappointing — I don’t want to see someone playing with my food before I eat it.

However, like every other person in the place, I waited with bated breath throughout the process to see that perfect cross-section of my sky-high sandwich being sliced in half and presented to me.

I opted for the Southern Fried Chicken on brown bread, which is loaded with chicken, house coleslaw, lettuce, and spicy creole dressing, and there’s no denying it looked epic.

The finished product was about the size of my head, and while it made for a great Instagram picture, it was quite a problem… how the hell are you supposed to eat it?

The sandwiches are definitely Insta-worthy… (Image: Courtney Pochin)

Yes, you get an impressive amount of food for your money here, but it’s almost impossible to eat.

Josh Kleiner, chief operating and marketing officer of Sandwich Sandwich, said recently the Independent that he’d be “impressed” if someone in London could actually finish one of their sandwiches, and frankly, so would I — I failed miserably to tackle mine.

The whole thing was too much. And there was definitely too much coleslaw; unfortunately it was all I could taste.

I don’t normally complain about generous portion sizes, but I think this might be a classic example of bigger not always being better.

If I’m buying a sandwich, I want to be able to grab it and go, but these huge doortoppers don’t really work for a quick lunch. They’re too messy and once you finally figure out how to eat them, the filling starts falling out all over the place.

Fans of Man vs Food challenges will probably love Sandwich Sandwich, but for me, it was just disappointing.

The pictures drew me in, but (ironically) the real thing didn’t match.
