He said it happened overnight at 4am. Phelps said it was a grown man who vandalized her home and not trick-or-treaters.

“I was alerted by my next door neighbor,” he said. “I looked at my (Harris-Walz) political sign and the Halloween decorations that were vandalized.”

Phelps said he was shocked because he feels safe in his neighborhood. An outdoor camera on his property recorded the incident.

“It was something I didn’t expect,” he said. “This is a great neighborhood where our neighbors look out for each other.”

Although his home was vandalized, he said he doesn’t feel any less safe. He believes this was politically motivated.

“I’m more upset that as a country we’ve allowed the political climate to get into a fun, safe neighborhood,” he said. “It shouldn’t have been a problem.”

He says the Henderson Police Department was responsive in this situation and helped him feel safe.

FOX5 followed up with police after speaking with Phelps. Preliminary information indicates that the incident was politically motivated and not a hate or racially motivated crime.

Phelps says he’s added more rooms to his home and isn’t taking down his political signs. He told us that his neighbors have not faced a similar incident.
