Aurora Homes, Zoning Boards Accepting Applications | Aurora

Applications are open for seats on the Aurora Housing Authority and the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission — two major boards that lay the groundwork for Aurora lawmakers to make decisions.

The Aurora Housing Authority — which helps residents obtain affordable housing through partnerships with government entities, investors, landlords and non-profit organizations — has two vacancies starting Jan. 1.

They add one more member and one ex-officio member who is either the mayor or a councilor appointee. The ex officio member does not vote.

Applications will be accepted until further notice, according to a city news release.

In late June, the Aurora City Council approved an ordinance that changed board membership and term requirements.

Before the ordinance passed, the mayor appointed board members to five-year terms without term limits.

The ordinance provides that, starting January 1, 2025, the members of the board of directors are allowed to serve terms of two or three years.

It also changes the requirements for board members. According to the ordinance, one board member needs affordable housing experience, one needs financing experience, needs development experience, must have lived in affordable housing or have experience lacking it of shelter. Three may have general knowledge and one must be an ex-officio member.

The ordinance gets rid of current council members before their terms are up, then allows them to run for two- or three-year terms.

One board member’s term expired on June 30. The ordinance states that they are effectively terminated from office, but can apply again starting January 1, 2025.

The terms of the other board members have staggering expiration dates in the next two years.

The Council meets on the second Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m

As the Aurora Housing Authority seeks two new members, the Aurora Planning and Zoning Commission, which provides planning and development recommendations to the board, is also looking to fill a seat.

On Monday, the Aurora City Council endorsed the reappointment of two of the commission’s members, whose terms expire Dec. 31.

In the meantime, the city is accepting applications for one more spot. The board will have candidates interview by Dec. 2, interview candidates on Dec. 16 and appoint the new commissioner in January.

Applications are open until November 22, and outgoing commissioners can reapply for reappointment.

Members must be registered voters and residents of Aurora for at least one year prior to appointment, and terms of service are three years. The commission meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m

To apply for the commission, applicants may call the City Hall Office at 303-739-7094 or visit AuroraGov.org/Boards.
