Mika Brzezinski was moved to tears by the Texas woman’s tragic death

Good morning Joe host Mika Brzezinski choked up as she told the story of a Texas woman who tragically died after being denied care during a miscarriage after the medical team claimed they could not act until the fetal heartbeat had stopped.

Thursday, an article published by ProPublica detailed how Josseli Barnicaa 28-year-old woman who was 17 weeks pregnant died in 2021 after a hospital delayed treatment for her miscarriage, fearing legal repercussions under Texas abortion laws.

Although her abortion was progressing, doctors refused to intervene until the fetal heartbeat stopped, citing legal concerns. For 40 hours, Barnica remained exposed to the risks of infection, which eventually led to her death from sepsis.

Brzezinski told the story while dissing the former president of Donald Trump vowed at a rally in Wisconsin Wednesday night to “protect women” whether they “like it or not”.

The host argued that after the repeal of federal abortion protections under Roe v. Wade under Trump, state restrictions have created ambiguity for doctors who fear prosecution. Medical experts agree that Barnica’s death was preventable and criticize the law for putting lives at risk by restricting timely medical intervention.

After challenging Trump’s promise, backtracking on a supercut of his previous comments about women, including the notorious Go to Hollywood tape, Brzezinski was moved to tears as she told Barnica’s story.

“This woman here, she was so excited to have another baby. She is now one of two women in Texas who died after doctors delayed her emergency care,” the host said.

She continued: “The child was completely unviable. It was a miscarriage. They had to save her. And if you take the steps and do the health care that helps empty the uterus, then that keeps her from getting infected and dying.”

Brzezinski detailed how Barnica’s husband rushed to her bedside before becoming emotional and having to stop to gather himself and carry on.

Turning to the Republican nominee, Brzezinski said: “Is Donald Trump the protector of women? Because his bans just killed another woman. She suffered for 40 hours in agony as her womb remained exposed to bacteria, and three days later this young mother, who was so excited to bring another life into this world, died. This is just another story and there will be many, many, many more about life in America, life in Trump’s America for women.”

Becoming angry, she concluded, “So when you’re looking at him as a protector, keep that in mind. I’m not sure what he’s talking about. It’s kind of a sick, distorted, fascist way.”
