Suspect injured in reported shootout with police on Cleveland’s West Side

CLEVELAND, Ohio – One suspect was wounded and two other suspects are in police custody after a shootout with officers Monday night in the Brooklyn Center neighborhood, reports say.

In a briefing with reporters on the spot covered by WKYC Channel 3Cleveland Police Chief Annie Todd said two Cleveland police officers and an officer with the Northeast Ohio Crime Intelligence Center’s Weapons Task Force were involved in the shooting.

Todd said officers were in the neighborhood looking for suspects involved in “several violent crimes” in the city, but did not specify what type of crimes. Around 6:20 p.m., Todd said officers spotted several suspects near the intersection of West 31st Street and Denison Avenue, which is just west of Pearl Road. Todd said the suspects opened fire on the officers.

The injured suspect was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, but no information was provided on the suspect’s condition. Todd said police are still investigating and it’s unclear if other suspects may be at large.

“Community safety, that’s our primary concern right now,” Todd said.
