SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – People in Savannah got a free tree Saturday when the Savannah Tree Foundation hosted its annual “Trick or Tree” event.

The Savannah Tree Foundation protects and grows Chatham County’s urban forest.

Every year on Halloween weekend, the organization provides free trees for people to plant in their own yards.

This year, the Savannah Tree Foundation removed 750 trees. There were 12 different species to choose from, including red maples and persimmon trees.

Organization leaders say Trick or Trees not only grows their foundation, but also Savannah’s outdoor spaces.

“The trees we’re giving away today were actually grown at our nursery through volunteer events and staff efforts and more,” said Savannah Tree Foundation Operations Manager Matt White.

“We love live oaks here in Savannah, and that’s certainly true at the Tree Foundation, and they’re a big part of our urban forest. But it’s also important to get these other types of trees. Different sizes, different ages, different species. And that’s really what, like everything else, diversity is strength,” said Savannah Tree Foundation Executive Director Zoe Rinker.

The International Tree Climbing Championship (ITCC) was also held in Daffin Park on Saturday.

Instead of splitting the two events, organizers have joined together to promote arboriculture right here in the Hostess City.

If you missed out on getting your free tree this year, the Savannah Tree Foundation will be back next year with more to choose from.
