Man dies after standoff with police in Fairfield

A police standoff in Fairfield ended with the suspect’s death in a shooting Friday night, police said.

Police responded to the 2800 block of Elmhurst Circle regarding disturbance calls in the area. There, they learned that a 58-year-old resident was harming other family members and damaging the exterior of the home and threatening to burn it down.

A man and a woman, relatives of the suspect, managed to flee to a neighbor’s home. Police said the callers advised them that the suspect was armed with a rifle outside the home and that he had several weapons in the home and was threatening to hurt others.

The man then retreated inside the home while officers formed a de-escalation plan, police said. There, he allegedly pointed a gun from a second-story window. An officer then shot the suspect.

The suspect retreated into the home and SWAT took over the scene, police said.

The police found the man dead inside the home. The exact circumstances of his death remain unclear.

Family members with the man were taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries they allegedly caused their relative. Officials did not specify the extent of the injuries.

No officers were injured during the shooting.
