100 years ago

October 26, 1924: Plans for placing the local Boy Scout organization in Lincoln on a more liberal and permanent basis were made at a meeting of the Lincoln Boy Scout council on Friday (Oct. 24). An intensive campaign for funds to cover the 1925 budget will be undertaken during the week beginning November 17. The budget for next year is $3,600 and is based on the actual research needs of the 10 Lincoln troops, it was explained.

75 years ago

October 26, 1949: The the situation for coal burners was named “desperate,” “critical,” “worrying,” and “just fair” by Bloomington-Normal coal dealers today. Only one of the five dealers called said he had a supply of coal to raise on hand. Widespread strikes led most coal dealers to limit customers to one ton at a time. The coal coming into Bloomington comes from the Progressive mines in Illinois and some in Kentucky.

October 26, 1974: About 95% of business people in downtown Normal oppose the removal of traffic or parking in front of their shops. The eventual elimination of both is included in one of three mall plans being studied by city officials. Council members have not taken a position on the plans, but the Normal Planning Commission voted unanimously last week for a plan to eliminate traffic and parking on a three-block stretch of North and Beaufort streets from Fell Avenue to Linden Street.

October 26, 1999: Illinois State University spent about $100,000 about last week’s inaugural events for President Victor Boschini, according to ISU officials. By comparison, Eastern Illinois University in Charleston will inaugurate President Carol Surles on October 29. ISU spokesman Jay Groves said the investment has paid off in an improved image for the school as it prepares to launch a major fundraising campaign.
