Red Lobster pledges to replace its executive suite following the never-ending shrimp crisis

Red Lobster pledges to replace its executive suite following the never-ending shrimp crisis

One of America’s favorite casual dining chains has had an embarrassing few months — and they’re blaming the shrimp.

In May, Red Lobster filed for bankruptcy after more than 50 locations closed amid massive losses from its wildly popular Endless Shrimp promotion. Then, in August, the seafood chain brought in a new CEO: Damola Adamolekunthe 35-year-old former chief executive of PF Chang.

“This is, without exaggeration, one of the most important companies in American history,” Adamolekun said CNN. “There have certainly been big mistakes made in recent years.”

But since he took the corner office, Adamolekun has been on a the mission to restore the Red Lobster’s sea legs. One of the major mistakes he was referring to was promoting the endless shrimp chain. Although extremely popular with guests, it led the company to operating losses of millions. It also put undue stress on servers and kitchen staff, Adamolekun said CNN.

Under Adamolekun’s leadership, the company plans to make massive changes, such as overhauling restaurants and trimming the menu, which he said has too many dishes. They also “finished closing restaurants,” Adamolekun said, and the chain currently has 545 locations. All this is part of a more than $60 million plan so that the seafood chain does not drown again.

In addition to structural and menu changes, Red Lobster is also refreshing its C-suite. Just in the last week, the seafood chain began rounding out its executive team with seasoned restaurant leaders, both with decades of experience.

On Tuesday, the company announced that Bob Baker will take over as chief financial officer. He has a long history in restaurant management, previously serving as CFO of Checkers & Rally’s in Tampa, Florida, Benihana in Miami and Cafe Rio Mexican Grill. Prior to that, he held finance, operations, M&A and accounting roles at the Fortune 1000 fast food corporation. Huh! trademarks. He replaces Stephanie Medley, who has been interim CFO since February and was previously chief strategy officer and chief financial officer of Ruby Tuesday.

Then on Wednesday, Red Lobster also announced the appointment of its new chief marketing officer, Nichole Robillard. Most recently, she led the Smokey Bones barbecue chain through a period of rebranding and business transformation that could serve Red Lobster well as it finds its way out of a financial crisis. During the bankruptcy, Red Lobster’s marketing was handled by Sara Bittorf, a specialist in recovery and restructuring, according to Marketing Diva.

In mid-September, Adamolekun assured customers and investors that the brand was swimming in the right direction as it emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

“Red Lobster is now a stronger and more resilient company,” he said in a Sept. 16 statement. “And today is the beginning of a new chapter in our history.”
