A Rock County drug dealer has been sentenced after a man overdosed and died

JANESVILLE, Wis. (WIFR) – A 49-year-old man is being sentenced after being found guilty of dealing drugs to a man who later overdosed and died.

David Steptoe of Janesville was found guilty of first degree reckless homicide by drug delivery and possession of fentanyl with intent to deliver. The charges stem from cases in 2021 and 2023.

On October 25, a judge sentenced Steptoe to 32 years in the Wisconsin state prison system; 22 years in prison and 10 years of extended supervision.

Prosecutors say Steptoe sold drugs to several people throughout Rock County, including fentanyl to a 41-year-old man, which led to his overdose and death.

Investigators say Steptoe was also in possession of cocaine and fentanyl at the time of his arrest in January 2023.
