VGChartz’s series of sales comparison articles are updated monthly, and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated gaming hardware numbers. Charts include comparisons between PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch, as well as older platforms. There are articles based on our global estimates, as well as in the US, Europe and Japan.

This monthly series compares the US aligned sales of PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 was released in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 was released in November 2013. This means that the holiday periods for both consoles line up.

August 2024 is the 46th month that the PlayStation 5 is available. In the last month, the gap widened in favor of the PlayStation 5 compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 by 43,536 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has outsold the PS4 by 0.67 million units. The PS5 is currently ahead of the PS4 by 1.57 million units.

The PS5 has sold 21.37 million units in 46 months, while the PS4 has sold 19.80 million units. Month 46 for PS5 is August 2024 and for PS4 is August 2017.

The PS4 passed 20 million in month 47, 25 million in month 57, and 30 million in month 71. The PS4 has sold 34.92 million units to date in the US. The PS5 is 13.55 million units behind the PS4’s US lifetime sales.
