2 criminals playing ‘Vaanar’ escape from jail during ‘Ramleela’ while trying to ‘find Sita’

Two notorious criminals, including a convicted murderer, escaped from the Haridwar district jail, officials said on Saturday. The escape took place on Friday night during a performance of ‘Ramleela’ inside the jail.

According to a PTI report, officials also revealed that the prisoners, Pankaj and Rajkumar, escaped from the premises using a ladder meant for construction work. A search operation is underway to capture them.

Pankaj, from Roorkee, was serving a life sentence for murder, while Rajkumar, an undertrial prisoner from Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, was awaiting trial.

Senior Superintendent of Police Pramendra Singh Doval and District Magistrate Kamendra Singh visited the jail for an inspection on Saturday. A forensics team and a dog team were also deployed to collect evidence.

According to the report in Times of India, these two prisoners were playing the role of ‘vaanar’ (monkey) and went in search of Goddess Sita.

FIR registered

“This morning we received information through the control room that two prisoners, one convicted and the other on trial, have escaped from prison. The prison administration was checking it initially. When the district administration got the information, we started combing and checking at all places,” Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pramendra Singh Dobal told ANI.

“A case has been registered under relevant sections. Soon, they will be arrested and legal action will be initiated. Prisoner Pankaj was convicted u/s 302 of IPC and prisoner Ram Kumar was tried on the charge of kidnapping “, the official added.

Accusing the jail administration of ignorance, Haridwar District Magistrate Karmendra Singh said, “Construction work is going on in the jail, Ramleela was also being organized here yesterday; taking advantage of this, both the prisoners escaped from the prison with a No doubt, it is a matter of ignorance on the part of the prison administration, the investigation is on and a judicial inquiry will be held.

Congress attacks Uttarakhand government

Reacting to the incident, former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat stated that the current CM Pushkar Singh Dhami has committed a grave mistake in connection with the escape of prisoners from a jail in Haridwar.

“What is happening in our state? This is a big blemish on our administrative system. This is a serious matter. During Covid-19 also, it was a mistake to give parole to many prisoners to isolate them. They could have installed other places. It was a serious mistake by the police system,” PTI news agency said.
