Arrest in August for a shooting near Galileo Academy that injured a teenager

The San Francisco Police Department arrested a young man in the shooting death of a teenage victim in August after the victim refused to join a gang, according to his mother.

Police made the arrest around 4pm on Tuesday when they saw the 17-year-old suspect in Ocean Beach. During the arrest, police recovered a loaded handgun and other items possibly related to the Aug. 21 shooting near Ghirardelli Square and Galileo Academy.

The 16-year-old victim was shot in the ankle about 12:30 a.m. a block from the high school. His mother previously told KTVU that other boys invited her son to a park where they pressured him to join their gang. When he refused, they shot him.

The victim is a recent immigrant from Colombia and was being bullied by other boys at his school before the shooting incident, his mother said.

The suspect was identified as a San Francisco resident. It is not clear if they were also a student at the Galileo Academy.

He was booked into the Juvenile Justice Center for felony assault with a firearm.

KTVU reached out to SFUSD for comment on the recent arrest and is awaiting a response. The victim’s mother could not immediately be reached for comment.
