Justin Hartley’s follow up This is us it would be Kevin Pearson’s dream. follower became the number one new show when it premiered in the spring. Over the summer, CBS brought the cast back for a panel with the Television Critics Association. Hartley stayed to talk to reporters afterwards and at the party in the evening.

The first season already included guest stars like Jensen Ackles as Colter Shaw’s brother (Hartley) and Hartley’s real-life wife Sofia Pernas as rival bounty hunter Billie Shaw. Hartley showcased Colter’s new rewards and ongoing storylines in season two, which premieres Sunday, October 13, 2024 at 8:00 PM ET/PT.

Justin Hartley follower Season 2 interview

Are you ever surprised when you learn more about Colter?

Justin Hartley: “We dive into a lot of these things. We talk about it a lot, so I’m clear on everything. And the hope is that it never happens. Now, nothing is perfect, so it could happen. So many things happen that you try not to think about what you did three weeks ago, but we’ve ironed out a lot of these things intentionally so that hopefully the idea is that that doesn’t happen.”

Your last character was an actor like yourself dealing with Hollywood stuff. Is it good to play a character who doesn’t have any of that industry stuff?

Justin Hartley: “Yeah, look, Kevin Pierson will always be in my heart. It was the time of my life. I loved it, but let’s face it. This business, a lot of times you get caught. When they see you do something, if you do it right , there are those who think I’ve done well, so they want to see you. To get a chance to do something really different with some familiar faces. I don’t miss it. Selfishly, like actor, to be able to cut his teeth in something completely different is pretty amazing.”

You finished the season at the beach, presumably retired. So is season two all about the beach?

Justin Hartley: “Listen, we have to take you to the writers’ room. I love the idea.”

What will bring Colter out of retirement?

Justin Hartley: “Well, he was taking a little break. He’s a man of action, but I think there’s always time to think about things. I think a lot of things fell to him at the end of the first season. When he asked, “What are you going to do?” He says, “Right now. It’s only going to take a minute. You’ll see that he doesn’t take that much time off.”

You said that your wife, Sofia Pernas, is coming back for the second season. What was it like working with her?

Justin Hartley: “I love carpooling. This is fun. She is wonderful. If I had my choice, I would spend every minute with her, so anytime I have a chance to work with her. Also, you know what’s great is when you meet someone who means so much to you who you’re so proud to be with, who you’re so proud of and such a fan of, to be able to see her work because she’s such a talented actress, she elevates the scenes So it makes my job easier, actually.

She is wonderful to work with. I love the character too. She brings so many layers to this character. We have a lot of fun things to come.”

Is it funny that he was running for Colter?

Justin Hartley: “Yeah, I love the dynamic where it’s like you can see it as a competition, but there’s also a story, so there’s a little bit of bad blood, but it’s also like, are they going to fix things? They’re not “Can you trust her? I don’t know if Colter can trust her. There’s a lot of room to work on that.”

Has Colter changed in season two?

Justin Hartley: “I think ‘evolved’ is a good word. Throughout the first season, he had this idea about the tragedy behind his father’s death and who was responsible. Even though he knew he didn’t have all the pieces of the puzzle and all the information, he was pretty sure he knew how things were going. When you find out at the end of the season, you realize that everything he had been thinking wasn’t, in fact, true. So that makes things they go back and, I think, someone like Colter especially, think well, maybe I have to rethink my angst about how I do my business because I was living my life at a certain time based on all these things that I thought were true. I found out that they are not actually true.”

Is this naive in any way?

Justin Hartley: “I don’t know if it’s as naive as it would be a bit of a confidence check, wouldn’t you say, ‘Wait a minute, did I make a mistake?’ He’s not used to being wrong, is he? He’s going to ask questions until he gets the answers. He’s going to work and work and work until he gets them answer. He doesn’t give up. He had the answer and then he found out he didn’t have the answer. So he just makes you say, ‘Wait a minute, what did I tell you?’

There are hints that they will or will not have a relationship with Reenie. Now that you are the number one show, do you hope to make it longer with success?

Justin Hartley: “The hope and the goal is to never drag anything. I think a lot of times people do. A lot of times people say, “Hey, we’ve got something really cool.” We don’t spoil it, so drag it.’ I won’t allow it. Nothing will be dragged. No, we have to fill it with a wonderful, fantastic story. I don’t even know if we have enough time to tell the story. That’s the amount of information we have and the story we have to tell you.

The hope is to never drag it, but I know what you’re saying. This must be something seeping under the circuit. We have that history.”

Does Colter and Reenie’s professional relationship have as much chemistry as romance?

Justin Hartley: “I think so. It’s close.”

the joke

Justin Hartley: “Yeah, I think there’s an interesting banter between the two of them that’s kind of familiar but also respectful. They never disrespect each other, I don’t think. It’s more of a playful thing and a familiarity. Almost like, ‘I can talk to you in a certain way without being offended,” and she feels the same way. She does a little bit more of that, to be honest, than Colter. Yeah, I think they respect each other a lot. I think at heart of this relationship there is respect”.

turned on This is usnothing was dragged. You knew when Jack died, you knew every moment.

Justin Hartley: “You’re right, but back to your question, has Colter evolved, certainly as a producer, this is the first show I ever produced, but also as an actor, you expect to evolve. You expect to bring things from other shows you’ve been on .I was lucky to be on that show and around all those people. Hope you bring all that, all that good stuff, and all that sensibility to your next project. Like the things you don’t like, you say : “Okay, I’ll leave it alone. I won’t take it with me.”

follower it is potentially limitless because there will always be rewards to collect. How does that compare to having all six seasons of This is us and the life story of the Pearsons traced?

Justin Hartley: “Hmm, I guess it would be different, wouldn’t it? That’s a good point. I hadn’t thought about that until now. I would say, I think fundamentally, this is a procedural show that’s kind of, I guess, the building block that the does unlimited, while This is us it wasn’t However, we have a serialized element. So I’d say it’s not unlimited. I think maybe the procedural element, cases or jobs are limitless.

I think this show emerges and settles on family and the fact that Colter leads with his heart, the fact that he’s looking for that missing piece of his life. He is a family man who, oddly enough, is alone, he is a lone wolf. He is and is also a family man at heart. That’s what draws me to the character. So I don’t know if it’s unlimited in that sense. I know what you’re saying about the procedural aspect.”

Or at least the showrunners haven’t decided on season six yet.

Justin Hartley: “Well, we don’t know. They could have decided that.”

Have others been discussed? This is us guest cast members follower?

Justin Hartley: “I’d be willing to have them all over again. If I had my way, I’d have them all at the same time, but it’s a different show. I’d love that. Imagine a life where you can do exactly what you want to do. They call it work. I love what I do and doing it with people that you absolutely love. That’s how I feel about all these people.”

Any of The young and the restless would you like to see it follower?

Justin Hartley: “I have a lot of friends there too. Wouldn’t that be great? Missy Peregrym would be great to bring. Eric Braeden would be great to bring.”

You have a full season of 22 episodes. Be careful what you wish for?

Justin Hartley: “Come back to me in a few months. I think I’ll be fine. I try to lie down. They’re taking care of me, so we should be fine.”

As you film on location, you begin to be invaded follower fans?

Justin Hartley: “No, we are in the middle of nowhere a lot of the time. We are left alone. We don’t travel to big cities and stuff, so I think we’ll probably be fine, although I could be wrong. we’ll see.”
