Georgetown officials are considering expanding downtown parking restrictions

City officials are considering adding portions of downtown Georgetown streets to an ordinance that limits parking to three consecutive hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.

In a few words

On Oct. 22, City Council members discussed adjusting parking near Georgetown Square. The update would affect parking on stretches of Sixth Street, South Main Street and Church Street by adding hourly parking limitations and no-parking zones, according to city documents.

“As downtown continues to grow, the demand for more parking options has increased,” Downtown & Tourism Director Kim McAuliffe said during the presentation.

what to expect

City Council members unanimously approved the first reading of the ordinance, but officials must vote on the agenda item a second time. If given final approval, the updated parking provisions would take effect Dec. 1, according to city documents.

Current 15-minute parking spaces will not be affected by the current proposal, McAuliffe said.
