Neil Foden: Gwynedd councilors quit cabinet in row over pedophile boss

Becca Brown, Berwyn Parry Jones, Dafydd Meurig and Elin Walker Jones issued a joint statement, saying they “want to distance ourselves from the comments made by leader Dyfrig Siencyn”.

“We stand with the victims,” they said, adding that they fully support calls for a public inquiry.

“We deeply regret that the council’s leadership problems have drawn attention to what is most important in this tragic situation, namely the suffering of women.”

In a statement issued by the council on Friday afternoon, the leader said: “I sincerely apologize to all those who have suffered at the hands of sex offender Neil Foden and would like to reassure the people of Gwynedd, and in particular the victims, that I and my fellow councilors are determined to leave no stone unturned to establish what went wrong and to make sure this never happens again.”

He added: “Furthermore, in light of the new allegations about Neil Foden on the BBC program this week, I support the call for a public inquiry.

“At the weekend I will talk to my team-mates and consider my own situation, before deciding the best way forward.”

Ahead of the council leader’s apology, Plaid’s source branded the council leader “stubborn” and said his position was “completely untenable”.

Speaking on BBC Radio Wales Breakfast, ap Iorwerth did not back Siencyn, instead saying: “I trust, absolutely, that Gwynedd council understands that there is work to be done here.

“Nothing else is important, and this is to get to the truth on behalf of all those young people who have suffered at the hands of this peofile.”

Pressed on whether he was apologizing, he replied: “Everyone involved in any way should apologize, of course. We still don’t really know what the apology is for.”
