Few showers today and cool for the rest of the week

SAGINAW, Michigan (WNEM) – A cold front we’ve been tracking since last week in your early warning forecast arrives early this morning with some more patchy showers, but will mostly end the recent run of summer-like temperatures for the rest of this week If you liked those temperatures, it was definitely an enjoyable stretch! If you prefer fall weather, the next few days will be fine for you!

We’re also tracking another cold front on Friday that brings a number of scattered showers. While it won’t be a drenching rain, it will rain more than we’re picking up today. Those showers are also expected to clear just in time for the Friday Night Lights! More details below.

today

This morning has already started mild and windy. The cold front is just knocking on the door of mid-Michigan and is expected to pass between 7am and 11am. The temperatures you walk out the door to this morning will be the warmest of the day. Officially, that will put highs around 61 degrees. Temperatures will drop into the low 50s during the afternoon. The normal high for October 23rd is 57 degrees, so while we have an unusual temperature pattern today, we’ll generally be much closer to where we should be for this time of year.

Wednesday will have cooler temperatures in the afternoon than in the morning.

It will also be windy throughout the day with winds turning northwest 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. This breeze will drop a lot of leaves today, now that we are in full color, or only starting to go over the top in some places (especially in the north).

Wind gusts up to 30 mph are expected Wednesday.

Showers will also be a bit patchy today. We’re expecting a line of light showers along the cold front in the morning, but that line of rain will move quickly anywhere. Behind the front in the afternoon, showers will only be emerging. Today’s rainfall totals are likely to stay below 0.1 inch.

A short line of showers will line up along the cold front.

tonight

Skies clear quickly overnight leading to mostly clear skies. As a result of this and a northwesterly wind of 5 to 10 mph, lows are expected to drop as low as 33 degrees. Talk about re-igniting the freezer!

Thursday

Despite the cooler temperatures, this is going to be a nice day! Expect mostly sunny skies with a high of 58 degrees. The wind will be out of the southwest at 5 to 10 mph. This will be a perfect day for yard cleanup, or maybe if you just want to play a round of fall golf.

Thursday has highs in the upper 50s.

friday

The cold front that we have also been following the evolution of on Friday is also on track. This front will move through the early afternoon, but we expect a wave of scattered showers to pass ahead of the front. This causes most showers in the morning. The showers should be more widespread and longer lasting than any of the showers we saw on Wednesday. This rain, however, remains light.

We expect the rain totals to add up up to 0.25″ from this system. While this won’t erase our drought, at least it’s something! This could alleviate the fire danger in the short term, but with how dry everything is, the ground will end up absorbing it very quickly .Just a reminder, the DNR still prohibits open burning in the northern half of mid-Michigan, see the DNR link in the Monday section of our direct links page.

Highs will reach 58 degrees with a west southwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Temperatures will drop to 39 degrees on Friday night. Take a look at the beautiful weekend in your 7-day forecast from TV5’s First Alert!
