Si King of the Hairy Bikers described the situation as “a bit strange” when discussing the death of his best friend and co-star Dave Myers. Dave, who rose to fame alongside Si as part of the motorcycle cooking duo, died aged 66 in February.

The two had been friends for 30 years. Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley spoke to Si today on This Morning, where Si mentioned that she’s still going to talk to Dave, temporarily forgetting about his death.

Si said: “It’s a sure fit. Even he was complaining… He was my best mate and he’s still my best mate, that never happens. But he’s missed and it’s all a bit strange .

He added: “The grieving process started a long time ago for me. When Dave was diagnosed, it was a big diagnosis, and it really started because it was about the fight and that’s what we focused on.

“Grief is a very individual journey because it’s about emotional adjustment to loss and things that are no longer tangible, and that’s what’s weird about moving your head around.

“The number of times I’ve thought ‘I haven’t heard from this Toerag in years…’ and then I’m like ‘Oh man…’ so it’s raw for anyone who loses someone, but there are two things that are true in life: you start it and you finish it.

“The middle part is about what you make of it. Dave loved his life, lived it to the fullest and was happy to be there.” He added: “You know, I’ve got a lot less guts than Dave because he’d do things that I’d say, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me’, like Strictly Come Dancing, for example, he loved it.

“Could he dance? Could Nelly? But it was amazing to watch. It was his heart and soul performance, which is what you always get with Dave. That’s who he was.”

Of their success as a couple, Si said: “It was like winning the lottery. We were two working-class boys from the north and it’s been a privilege to see the world we live in and talk to wonderful people who are sometimes completely different of the culture we know and understand and which are completely different.

“He was a joy, he was always above everyone else. … He was always with integrity and then everything else followed. It was a lovely atmosphere to be a part of.”
