Novak Djokovic reveals how Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer’s retirements affected him: ‘A big part of me stayed with them’

Novak Djokovic admitted that “a big part of me went with them” as he reflected on how the retirements of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have affected him.

The ‘Big Three’ of Djokovic, Nadal and Federer have dominated men’s tennis for the past 20 years, but will soon be down to just one active member.

That will leave Djokovic, 37, as the only ‘Big Three’ player left on the ATP Tour.

Speaking about Nadal’s retirement after reaching the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters, Djokovic said: “He’s been my biggest rival, the rivalry I had with him has impacted me the most in my career.

“We knew the time was coming sooner rather than later, but it’s still a shock when it officially came, also for Roger a few years ago when he announced his retirement and Andy (Murray) this year, it’s a bit overwhelming for me to to be honest.. I don’t know what to do about it.

“I still enjoy competing, but a part of me left with them, a big part of me, so it’s hard news for the tennis world, the sports world.

“Nadal is an inspiration to millions of children around the world and can be very proud of his career.”

Djokovic and Nadal have met 60 times, with their last meeting at the Paris Olympics.

“Your legacy will live on forever,” Djokovic wrote.

“Only you know what you had to endure to become an icon in tennis and sports in general. Thank you for pushing me to the limit so many times in our rivalry that has impacted me the most as a player.

“Your passion for representing Spain has always been remarkable. I wish you the best possible farewell in Malaga with the Spanish Davis Cup team. I will be there in person to honor your stellar career.”
