Catch residents calling for police chief fired after incident with school resource officer

HOOKS, Texas (KSLA) – Residents of Hooks, Texas packed town hall on Monday, October 21st to voice their displeasure with Hook Police Chief Johnny Millwood.

“We want to see one of two things. We want to see a resignation. We want the council to vote to remove the police chief,” Chris Harris.

In September, Chief Millwood reassigned school resource officer Jay Hedges after he allegedly handled an incident on school property that led to the arrest of a juvenile for making threats against the school. Hedges, who had been employed as an SRO for nearly 20 years, decided to resign.

On behalf of her husband and those upset with the boss, Hedge’s wife, McKenzie, addressed the council. He said the chief’s timeline of what happened is not accurate.

“I encourage city officials to think hard and who they represent the city of Hooks with. The chief is not even capable of verifying facts and procedures. I think he is a liability to our community and district and we deserve better.” McKenzie Hedges said.

City Attorney Butch Dunbar would not say much about the case since it involved an employee, but he said the complaint was brought to school officials by a parent on Tuesday, the father contacted the chief on a Thursday, the chief issued the arrest. on a Friday, and the chief arrested the juvenile on Saturday.

The city council took no action, but residents say they will continue to fight for change.

“If we can’t get anybody, we’ll come back to the next meeting of all of you with a city ordinance petition signed by enough to take this action one way or another. That’s all I have to say,” Harris said. .

Millwood has been police chief for less than a year.
