BB the giraffe at the Denver Zoo is expecting her first baby

Two of the Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance’s giraffes will become parents this spring with the birth of their first calf, zoo officials announced this month.

BB and her mate Jasiri will welcome their first calf in March, Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance officials said in a Facebook post.

Both are 4-year-old reticulated giraffes who joined the herd in 2022, with BB coming from Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and Jasiri from Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City, Kansas.

BB and the calf are doing well, and she is voluntarily participating in their prenatal care, including ultrasounds, checkups and weigh-ins, according to the zoo.

This is the first giraffe born at the zoo since Dobby, now the oldest member of the herd at 8, was born in 2017.

“This news is not only exciting for DZCA, but is also a huge victory for this endangered species and supports the overall conservation efforts of animals in humane care,” zoo officials wrote in a post on Facebook.
