North Korea in Ukraine: Latest updates on Pyongyang’s troops joining the war in Ukraine

Ukraine and South Korea claimed in mid-October that Pyongyang had deployed troops to aid Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, likely as a result of a mutual defense pact signed in June.

In early October, Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Agency (HUR) claimed that Pyongyang had deployed troops to reinforce Moscow’s troops in Ukraine. Furthermore, media reports, citing HUR, claimed this six North Korean officers had been killed in a missile attack, along with 18 other Pyongyang troops allegedly they abandoned their positions near Ukraine.

HUR chief Kyrylo Budanov said on October 18 that Pyongyang was preparing send 11,000 soldiers to aid Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Following reports, Seoul’s National Intelligence Service (NIS). broadcast satellite images alleging North Korean troops in Russia’s Far East ahead of their deployment to Ukraine. Videos circulating on social media at the time were also shown Korean-speaking soldiers at a Russian military base.
