Wrexham celebrate their 160th birthday against Huddersfield Town

Paul Mullin sent Wrexham fans into a frenzy just 16 seconds into his side’s 1-0 win at Rotherham United on Saturday.

But it seems fitting that they will celebrate a major milestone on home soil tonight as the club celebrates its 160th anniversary.

Phil Parkinson’s side welcome Huddersfield Town to Stok Racecourse (19:45 BST) for a sixth straight League One home win this season.

The club has had a remarkable journey since the members of Wrexham Cricket Club were founded at a meeting in the Turf Hotel.

The players were keen to find a sport to occupy themselves during the winter, and played their first match against the Prince of Wales’s Fire Brigade on 22 October 1864.

Both teams played the match with just 10 players and according to reports on the day, the firemen won “comfortably” with a 2-1 victory.

Wrexham, enjoying a strong start to the season following the club’s impressive resurgence under Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in recent years, will be hoping for a better result than they achieved on that occasion 160 years ago when host the Terriers tonight. .
