Deebo Samuel hospitalized with illness, 49ers coach reveals

Deebo Samuel left the San Francisco 49ers’ Week 7 game against the Kansas City Chiefs in the second quarter. According to reports, the WR had been dealing with shortness of breath in the contest.

Kyle Shanahan revealed Monday that the star wide receiver had to check into the hospital Sunday night because of his symptoms. The coach said Samuel has a “pneumonia-like” illness and has fluid in his lungs.

It’s unclear how long Samuel will be out or if he’ll be available for next week’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. Losing Samuel would be huge for a team that also recently found out that star WR Brandon Aiyuk will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL.

Through 6 games in 2024, Samuel has 20 catches for 335 yards and 1 touchdown. The versatile weapon also has 51 rushing yards and 1 score on the ground.

Samuel entered the league as a second-round pick by the 49ers in the 2019 NFL Draft. The speedster played 5 seasons at South Carolina and earned first-team All-American and first-team All-SEC honors in 2018. Samuel finished his college career with 148 receptions for 2,076 yards and 16 TDs.

In 2021, Samuel had his best NFL season. The former Gamecock earned first-team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl selection after accumulating 1,405 receiving yards and 365 rushing yards.
