5 arrested for robbing retired scientist in Delhi, Rs 1.1 crore recovered – Delhi News

Delhi Police arrested two men, including a former employee of a retired DRDO scientist, allegedly stealing two million rupees in cash and gold ornaments at knifepoint from the scientist’s residence in Delhi’s Rohini, officials said on Monday.

The incident took place on October 18 at around 12.50 pm in the Prashant Vihar area when five men forced their way into the scientist’s house, posing as courier staff, a senior police officer said. police

Jasmeen Singh alias Gifty (42) and the scientist’s former employee Gaurav Kawatra (36), who provided information to the thieves, were arrested, the officer said.

Further investigation is on to arrest the rest of the accused, he added.

The scientist and his wife were home alone when one of the accused approached the scientist on the stairs, pretending to have papers for delivery, he said.

They then pushed him inside, gagged him and threatened him with a knife, demanding his son’s cash, the officer said.

The intruders restrained the couple, ransacked both floors of the house and stole gold and cash before locking them inside, he added.

The police registered an FIR and started an investigation into the case. CCTV footage of the area where the suspects were seen was being reviewed, he said.

The defendant had concealed the motorcycle’s license plate number, but following his route through the footage, the license plate on the front of the vehicle was identified, the officer said.

He said their faces were also captured in one of the images which led the police team to identify them and track them to Karol Bagh.

He further said the team also recovered Rs 10.15 lakh in cash, Rs 2.89 lakh frozen in a bank account and a recently purchased mobile phone worth Rs 1.38 lakh from the possession of the two accused .

Meanwhile, the crime branch unit has arrested three more accused and recovered Rs 1.10 crore from their possession.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sanjay Bhatia said his team was also investigating the matter.

The team received information that two of the accused were going to Delhi from Haryana with the stolen property, Bhatia said.

Based on the warning, Kamal (22) Ashish (22) stopped under the Narela flyover. They initially tried to evade the raid but were apprehended, he said.

They were carrying two bags full of cash and on checking the total cash in the two bags, it was found to be Rs 76 lakh, the police said.

The fifth accused, Pawan Singh (22), was also arrested and the stolen cash of Rs 34 lakh was recovered from his possession, the ACP said.

During interrogation, Pawan revealed that he along with his five associates hatched the plan to rob the scientist, the officer said.

He told the police that Gaurav did the reconnaissance and gave them all the information, Bhatia added.
