What is Liam’s Law? Everything we know about the fan petition launched after Liam Payne’s tragic death

In the wake of the tragic death of One Direction alum Liam Payne, fans of the late pop star have come together to launch a petition calling for legislation dubbed “Liam’s Law” to safeguard the mental health of artists from the entertainment industry.

A Change.org petition launched by a user named Day KV has managed to collect more than 24,000 of the 25,000 signatures needed, at the time of this writing.

The petition comes with a message that highlights the immense pressure that the entertainment industry brings along with the glitz and glamor that ultimately affects the mental health of celebrities.

“The resulting problems such as stress, anxiety, depression, substance abuse and even suicide are alarmingly high,” the petition says. It also notes that according to available research, performers are allegedly more likely to “suffer from these problems compared to the general population.”

The document also highlights that “the industry must be accountable and responsible for the welfare of its artists”, especially in light of the unfortunate demise of Liam Payne. “We seek to implore lawmakers to create legislation that protects the mental health of artists in the industry,” he says.

The petition explains that the law would help “require regular mental health reviews, adequate rest periods and the presence of mental health professionals on set, including any ongoing support” for celebrities.

It says the law would also help “ensure a healthier, safer and more conducive work environment for artists to cultivate their talents by reducing psychological distress.”

It would also help plan early interventions to protect artists and minimize negative outcomes “before it’s too late,” the petition says.

The petition also mentions how worrying the increase in the death rate of musicians before the age of 35 is and urges the public to take preventive action with immediate effect.

“The role of the artist is invaluable not only in the world of entertainment but also in society. Let’s ensure their protection and well-being,” reads the petition’s message.

“Your signature could be a lifesaver for these talented people, contributing to a larger movement of mental health awareness and care in industries around the world,” he concludes.

Another similar petition titled “Help protect people in the public eye – ‘Liam’s Law’ sign” also appeared online after the One Direction star’s fatal fall from the third floor balcony of ‘a hotel in Buenos Aires on October 16.

The second petition launched by user Chamali Samarasekera calls for laws to “protect children and adults from the public eye, especially those in the entertainment industry.”

It says Payne’s death “highlights the urgent need for comprehensive safeguards for people facing immense pressures in their careers”.

The online document calls for a proposal for a new law to be named after the late pop star with due permission from her loved ones with the aim of preventing “new tragedies and ensuring the safety of people in the public eye”.

This petition also reveals key provisions to be included in the law, such as “better safeguarding, regular drug checks, stronger legal penalties, greater detection and prosecution of online harassment, tougher penalties for harassment and privacy violations, support for tour challenges and regular checks for entertainment companies.”

He also says that “Liam Payne’s death is a call to action” and mentions that by implementing “Liam’s Law” authorities can help protect public figures from the dark side of fame and ensure their well-being .
