Van Halen rockers David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen had a strained relationship for decades, and that’s what torpedoed a planned reunion tour after Eddie’s death, the band’s drummer Alex Van Halen said , who is Eddie’s brother. Rolling Stone.

“What broke the camel’s back, and I can be honest about it now,” Alex explained, “was that I said, ‘Dave, at some point, we have to have a very open attitude, not a reverence, but an acknowledgment of Ed at the concert. If you look at how Queen does it, they show old footage. And the minute I said we had to recognize Ed, Dave blew a fuse… The vitriol that came out was unbelievable.”

Rockers David Lee Roth and the late Eddie Van Halen were members of Van Halen

Alex Van Halen had spoken to Queen’s Brian May about how the group manages to continue touring without their late former singer Freddie Mercury. Eddie Van Halen died of cancer in October 2020.

To him, Roth seemed offended by that suggestion, and Van Halen wasn’t having it.

“I’m from the street,” Van Halen said. “‘You talk to me like that, mom, I’m going to blow your brains out. Do you understand?’ And I mean this and that’s how it ended.”

Roth declined to comment for the magazine. EW has reached out to a representative for him.

“It’s just, oh my God. It’s like I don’t know him anymore,” Van Halen said. “I have nothing but the utmost respect for his work ethic and all. But Dave, you have to work as a community, Mom. It’s not just you anymore.”

He said he wasn’t too disappointed the tour didn’t work out, though, because he’s still dealing with the effects of a back injury from 2022.

“It’s a shame on the one hand, but it’s good on the other. Because now, in retrospect, playing the old songs isn’t really honoring anybody,” Van Halen said. “That’s like a jukebox, in my opinion… To find a replacement for Ed? It’s not the same.”

Still, Van Halen told the magazine that he and his former bandmate stay in touch.

She writes about her time with Eddie in her new memoir, brotherswhich comes out on October 22.
