Rasmus Hojlund played down comparisons with Ruud van Nistelrooy after his exquisite finish earned Manchester United a 2-1 comeback win over Brentford at the weekend.

Ethan Pinnock headed Brentford in front at half-time, a goal clouded by controversy as United defender Matthijs de Ligt was being treated for a head injury at the time.

But the Red Devils equalized with a sublime strike from Alejandro Garnacho shortly after the break and Hojlund completed the turnaround with a low effort over Mark Flekken to take the roof off Old Trafford.

Having missed the start of the season with a hamstring injury, Hojlund was making just his second start of the Premier League campaign on Saturday.

Erik ten Hag was keen not to overload Hojlund and risk further injury and the young forward was replaced by Joshua Zirkzee after scoring what turned out to be United’s winner.

The result lifted United to 11th in the table and Hojlund was delighted to be back on the pitch alongside Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernando, who assisted his goal in the 62nd minute.

“I think all of us up front clicked really well,” he told MUTV.

“It was great to play with Marcus, Alejandro, Bruno and all the guys from the beginning at Old Trafford again. I’ve really missed it.

“Obviously having an injury early in the season and now being 100% fit is a very good experience.

“I just try to bring everything I can every time I step on the pitch, especially here.”

The forward made a conscious decision to “not fight too hard” with Brentford’s defenders and was “very pleased” with the results.

“I think it was just about trying not to fight too much with the defenders,” he explained.

“I had a good situation where I extended it and thought, ‘You know what?’, and I just kept trying to focus on getting the ball at my feet and playing from there and it worked really well today.

“I am very satisfied with the performance of the team and myself.”

On his winning goal, Hojlund added: “The keeper does a great job of covering the spaces and I only really see one chance which is to go for the chip in the far corner.

“I’ve put in a lot of work to prepare for these types of moments and it worked out really well today.

When told there was a hint of Van Nistelrooy, United’s new assistant manager, in his end, Hojlund replied: “No! I don’t want to be compared to him.

“If you want to talk about him, that’s what I’m learning and I’m working very closely with him.

“Obviously, it’s a big, big step for me. Also, I can develop a lot.

“He’s doing a great job both as an (assistant) coach but also helping the team.”
