Former aide reveals Queen Elizabeth’s playful side and her love of Australia

Although she always carried out her duties with dignity, the Queen indulged in her private life, often delighting in scaring her passengers by driving wildly in her Range Rovers and Land Rovers around her country estates.

“(The Queen) would drive her cars quickly through Balmoral … (leaving passengers) with white knuckles,” Cohen said.

The ideas come after speaking with Cohen The Sun Herald about the Queen’s more playful side as she reflects on her professional relationship.

“The Queen had no ego, she was so comfortable with herself, but she loved it when things went wrong,” Cohen revealed.

“If a cake wasn’t being cut or a plaque wasn’t uncovered, because everything was so perfectly organized, it gave life flavor when things were going wrong.”

Despite Elizabeth’s mischievous side, Cohen explained that she “took (her role in society) very seriously and did it perfectly.”

Describing his former boss as a “shy” but “bold” woman, Cohen said the Queen was the “antithesis of celebrity” despite being one of the most famous people in the world.

Reflecting on his time as aide to the Queen, Cohen expressed fondness for the experiences he shared with Her Majesty.

“I loved, loved, loved the job as Assistant Private Secretary to the Queen. They were happy times because the Queen was in great shape,” he said.

Cohen was still at school when he first saw the woman who would become his future boss during the head of state’s visit to Australia in 1977 during his silver jubilee year.

Australia’s aide revealed she was “most excited” to see the Queen in person.
