PlayStation Leak Reveals Return of PS2 God of War Games

PlayStation Leak Reveals Return of PS2 God of War Games

It looks like PlayStation is preparing to re-release the PS2-era God of War games on PS5 and through PS Plus. In 2018, Sony rebooted the God of War franchise and took it from ancient Greek mythology to Norse mythology. In 2022, the reboot continued with the release of God of War: Ragnarok. While God of War has been well supported throughout the PS4 and PS5 generations, PlayStation has done little with previous God of War games. That seems to be changing, though.

As noted on Reddit, Sony recently updated the PS5’s PlayStation Plus tab to make it easier to navigate the PS Plus offering. One of these changes includes separating PS Plus classics into different categories based on their platform. And for each platform, art icons featuring a character from one of the supported games are included. Right now, the PS2 section features a Greek-era Kratos icon, which is strange because there are no PS2 God of War games available through PS Plus.

This is remarkable on its own, but even more remarkable with context. As you can now, the same thing happened to Regina from Dino Crisis before the PS1 game was added to PS Plus Premium this month.

This could be an error or an oversight, but it seems unlikely. The question isn’t whether this indicates that PS2-era God of War games will be coming to PS5 and PS Plus Premium, but which games specifically.

There are only two PS2 God of War games: the first God of War and God of War 2. Presumably the pair would be added, but it’s possible that one or the other will be added first, most likely the first game. Either way, Sony is doing something with beardless, angry Kratos involving PS Plus Premium.

If either or both of the PS2 God of War games make it to PS Plus Premium, it means that subscribers to the most expensive tier will be able to play both games for free. However, PS Plus Premium will not be required to play the games on PS5. They will be available for purchase, as always when PlayStation classics are brought to PS5 via PS Plus Premium. However, those who don’t want to buy the games outright will need a PS Plus Premium subscription.

At the time of publication, neither Santa Monica Studios nor PlayStation have commented on this apparent leak in any way. We don’t suspect this will change for a couple of different reasons, but if it does, we’ll be sure to update the story accordingly.
