A Maryland man was rescued Wednesday after spending the night at the bottom of a well, thanks to neighbors who heard his pleas for help.

The rescued man, whose name has not been released, suffered serious injuries after falling 30 feet into the well in Catonsville, the Baltimore County Fire Department said on Facebook.

Neighbor Wesley Straffin told local news station WBAL that he went out to get his dogs from his backyard when he “heard a guy calling for help.”

Straffin went to her father, Matt Straffin, to help her figure out what to do.

“We started yelling hello, hello, because we didn’t know where it was coming from,” Matt Straffin told WBAL. “And he started answering. He said, ‘Help, help. Hello. And it turns out it was our neighbor right behind us who had fallen into a well.’

Neighbors called 911 and in the meantime were able to get some water to the trapped man.

The man had fallen into the well the previous afternoon, fire department spokesman Travis Francis told People. From inside the well, the man said he watched it get dark outside and then saw the sun rise the next day.

“That’s when he knew it was a day to ask for help,” Francis said.

Matt Straffin told WBAL that he suspects the man didn’t even know the well was there. Pictures from the press scene show no markings indicating the presence of a well.

“It looked like the ground just gave way,” Straffin said. “It was about a two and a half foot wide hole.”
