“Ryan and I have a great relationship. It’s based on three things: love, respect and silliness. The third is really what keeps us going. But Lois went on a journey and when you get to know her, she lives up to it. Addiction is so close to the bottom of it,” Nash-Betts recalled. “So there are many layers to this performance because you never know where you are in your illness at any given time.”

Nash-Betts worked hard to portray Lois’s deteriorating mental health.

“She could be battered, she could be hungover or she could be drunk. Working with Ryan (helped) really mapped it out because you saw her in all the places she could be emotionally,” she explained. “(Also) this type of role with a detective down on his luck, drinking too much and still trying to solve the case is usually played by white men. So to be able to stand your ground as a black woman, you definitely have to a very grounded performance because how do you make it real?”

That’s what it’s like. And I’m the ringleader.”
