Report reveals extension decision between Suns and Kevin Durant

As he enters his age-36 season, Kevin Durant still won’t take the money.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported in an appearance on “NBA Today” on Friday that the Phoenix Suns All-Star will not sign an extension with the team before the Oct. 21 deadline (set for the day before start of the new season). Charania added that Durant is only eligible for a one-year extension right now, but can get a two-year extension from the Suns by waiting until next year.

Durant is currently signed with Phoenix for $51.2 million this season and $54.7 million next season. The former NBA MVP could lock in more money right now, keeping him safe until 2027 (when Durant will be 39). But Durant appears to be making the business call to hold out for an extension for another year and potentially work his way into his 40s.

Of course, the situation could change dramatically for the Suns between now and then. Right now they’re hit hard by the second apron of the luxury tax, and Suns owner Mat Ishbia recently indicated that he won’t keep the Big Three of Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal forever. Durant could also, as he is known to do, become frustrated with Phoenix and request a trade, so an extension for him around this time next year seems far from a sure thing.
