Lethbridge police officer charged with assault

A Lethbridge police officer has been charged in connection with a physical altercation that occurred while on duty at a detention facility.

The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) said the incident occurred on May 10, 2023, at its short-term detention facility.

The altercation, which occurred while a male inmate was being arrested, resulted in no injuries.

“The issue came to light following the officer’s review of the use of force report – a document that must be submitted when any use of force is used other than handcuffing and cooperative escort techniques,” LPS said in the statement.

The Professional Standards Unit investigated the incident and referred it to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service.

After reviewing the investigation, prosecutors recommended an assault charge for Chris Stock, a 23-year LPS member.

He is scheduled to appear in court on December 10. He has been assigned administrative duties until the case is settled in court.
