While Tomlin wanted to keep the status under wraps, Steelers wide receiver George Pickens apparently let the information slip while speaking to reporters after practice on Friday.

ESPN Steelers reporter Brooke Pryor posted the video to X, which shows Pickens talking about quarterback Russell Wilson. During questions, Pickens stated that he has spent more time with Wilson to acclimate to his style of play. Pickens then states, “Because this is his (Wilson) first start.

While Tomlin didn’t want the media to know who was starting, Pickens might have revealed who would take the lead on Sunday.

The Steelers starting Wilson isn’t all that surprising considering he’s a more experienced veteran than Justin Fields. Fields, however, has played good football in six starts.

Fields has helped lead the Steelers to a 4-2 record, throwing for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. He also has 231 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground.

All in all, Fields has shown that he should be the team’s starter. However, with the news of his alleged banquet, the young quarterback took the blame.

Fields claimed he hasn’t “played well enough” and that’s the main reason he’s being questioned as a starter. Regardless of his incredibly mature response on the bench, Fields has played well enough.

If Fields was really that bad, the team wouldn’t be 4-2.

Wilson was named the starter before the start of the season, but was still dealing with a calf injury he suffered in training camp. The veteran quarterback then sat out the first six games of the season. Now, he’s fully healthy and ready to play under center.

While the narrative was that Wilson was terrible in 2023, he put up very respectable numbers with the Denver Broncos. He finished the season with 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Wilson had a very good season, but fell out of favor with Broncos head coach Sean Payton. After the end of the 2023 season, Wilson hit free agency.

Wilson signed a one-year, $1.2 million minimum contract to play for the Steelers. Considering the price of his contract, Pittsburgh got a great deal by getting the Super Bowl champion signal caller.

The best news is that if Wilson starts and doesn’t play well, Fields will be waiting to return.
