Colin the Caterpillar has been the celebratory cake of choice for the past 34 years, first hitting M&S shelves in 1990.

Over the years, the high street retailer has sold slight variations of the cake, adding seasonal toppings and introducing a female version known as Connie.

All this time, the base of the cake has remained the same: a chocolate sponge cake, filled with chocolate buttercream and covered in a milk chocolate shell.

But for the first time, M&S is making a major change to Colin’s interior and changing the color of the chocolate buttercream.

For Halloween 2024, the supermarket is introducing its “scariest and best” Caterpillar ever. Known as Surprise Colin, this year’s seasonal cake features red buttercream to make the cake look “extra spooky”.

His face is also changing, to look more like a skeleton, and the sugar-covered chocolate beans on top are replaced with white chocolate bones.

Although the cake may look quite different, it will still taste the same as the one you know and love.

And big Colin isn’t the only cake getting a makeover, as Mini Colin the Caterpillars will also be filled with red buttercream for Halloween.

M&S Mini Skeleton Colin the Caterpillar Rolls are priced at £3.75 for a pack of five, while the limited edition full size cake is £12.

If you’re not a fan of the creepy treats, don’t panic too much as Colin’s regular versions are still available. And the retailer has also unveiled its Christmas version of the cake, which will be £15.

M&S Sleigh Ride Colin the Caterpillar Cake comes with plain chocolate buttercream, but also has some fun extras. The cake is decorated with festive chocolate sweets, including Santa’s hat and a gift box, and Colin sits inside a chocolate sleigh. As such, the supermarket claims it’s their “most chocolatey” Colin ever.

At Christmas, M&S also recently caused a stir with its viral chocolate shop advent calendar.

Metro recently tested the product and proclaimed it the “best” chocolate advent calendar for Christmas 2024.

It’s £12, but there’s a reason it’s proving so popular… (spoilers ahead).

If the big bag of chocolate buttons behind door number 25 wasn’t reason enough to buy this advent calendarthen I present to you the variety of chocolate hidden inside.

Four different treats await behind each door, including Marks & Spencer’s popular Mini Whips, filled with fluffy marshmallow.

You’ll also find caramel-filled chocolate buttons, brownie bites, and peanut butter and caramel chunks as you open each day.

And the best part is that you never know what you’re going to get, unlike, say, a Cadbury calendar, where each candy is a piece of Milk Milk. This is a little different, and every morning there will be a genuine surprise.

But what’s the verdict on the chocolate itself? Well, the Whips are delicious as always, and the Caramel Bites are wonderfully sweet, but it’s the Chunkies that are the star of the show here.

The perfect combination of salty, sweet, chewy and a little crunchy, these little chocolate nuggets are divine – the Metro lifestyle team agreed that the advent calendar was worth buying (albeit only in you could buy a whole bag for £2.75). if you prefer).

Did I mention that on the days you have the candy buttons behind the door, you get not just one, but two?! Don’t skimp on the sweet stuff here. M&S also proved popular in Metro’s recent croissant taste test, with the supermarket’s bakery croissant scoring an impressive 5/5.
