Commanders news: Jayden Daniels wants no part of the Lamar Jackson comparisons

Much like Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud did last season, Washington Commanders rookie Jayden Daniels has taken the NFL by storm this year. He has come into one of the toughest sports leagues and made it look easy.

Daniels has helped the Commanders jump to a 4-1 record through the first five games of the season, something many didn’t see coming. Washington’s offense has been one of the best in the NFL, with the rookie quarterback fully leading the charge.

He’s leading the way for the Rookie of the Year race and if his success continues, maybe he could even enter the MVP conversation. His incredible play to start his NFL career has surprised some and has people wondering who he compares to across the league.

The easy answer for people is two-time Baltimore Ravens MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson, and the two players will meet this weekend for a matchup. But Daniels has made it clear she wants no part of the Jackson comparisons.

“I don’t like it when people try to compare me to Lamar,” Daniels said. “We’re two different players. I want to be known as Jayden Daniels and not the next so-and-so.”

Jackson even weighed in on the comparison, saying they both want to make a name for themselves.

“He’s his own player,” Jackson said. “He’s his own man. At the end of the day, we’re trying to make a name for ourselves, not anybody else.”

Even if the two interlocutors do not want to compare, it will happen. Commanders head coach Dan Quinn sees some similarities, but mostly in their competitive spirit.

“These two are elite competitors at the highest level,” Quinn said. “That shows on tape, the way they extend plays, the way they finish, the way they lead their group. They both have their unique ways, but in this game there are great competitors and there are elite and these two guys are elite.”

Washington will travel to Baltimore this weekend for a heavyweight matchup. If they can come away with a win on the road, it would be their biggest of the season.

Through five career NFL games, Daniels has thrown for 1,135 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. He has also shown his dual-threat skills, rushing for 300 yards and four touchdowns on the season.
