DNA to blame, not diet: New study reveals real reason for gout | health

Although a poor diet can trigger gout attacks, genetics play a bigger role in the formation of gout, the study explains.

Gout is a form of arthritis that causes severe pain and swelling in the joints. Big toes, ankles, knees and fingers are most affected by gout. One of the key causes of gout was believed to be poor lifestyle choices. However, a recent study led by Professor Tony Merriman of the University of Otago revealed the real reason. The study stated that genetics play a bigger role in the development of gout than previously thought.

The study analyzed the genetic information of 2.6 million people, including 120,295 people with gout. The study demonstrated the role that inherited genetics play in the formation of gout. The researchers identified 377 genetic regions associated with gout, including 149 that had never before been associated with the disease.

Stigma associated with gout

Professor Tony Merriman, lead author of the study from the University of Otago’s Department of Microbiology and Immunology, said he was hopeful the study would change the way we understand gout. In a press release, he said the study dispelled the myth that gout has anything to do with bad lifestyle choices or poor diet — it’s a genetically influenced condition.

There is a certain stigma attached to gout: people feel ashamed that it is their poor life choices that lead to the condition. therefore They feel ashamed to seek proper medical treatment. This can cause the condition to worsen. The study is a wake-up call and may help uncover potential targets that may help improve treatment options.

Diet vs genetics

The study does not completely deny the influence of poor nutrition on the formation of gout. Certain dietary choices, such as eating red meat, can trigger gout attacks. However, the study observed that droplet formation is more complex than we know. The formation of gout involves high levels of urate, the formation of urate crystals in the joints and the immune system’s reaction to these crystals – genetics has a bigger role to play in this.
