Chandigarh: Stopped to check, drunk SUV driver assaults traffic cop

Police have booked an SUV driver for assaulting a traffic policeman after he stopped him for checking at a check post for drunk driving near Southend Hotel at Sector 34/35/43/44 Roundabout on Tuesday at night

The accused was identified as Ranvijay Singh, a resident of Bhindran village in Sangrur, Punjab.

According to the complaint of sub-inspector (SI) Hira Singh of the traffic staff wing, Sector 29, he was on duty at the roundabout with traffic commissioners Ajay Gupta and Sukhjit.

There they stopped Ranvijay, who was driving a Mahindra Thar (PB13-BR-9969), for a drunk driving test.

Through a breathalyzer, he was found to be driving while intoxicated. The IS said that when he was asked to produce documents of the vehicle, Ranvijay misbehaved with him and grabbed his neck. The entire incident was filmed by the police. He was issued a complaint, arrested and his vehicle was impounded.

The accused faces charges under Articles 121 (1) and 221 of the SNB.
