Why football fans have a big problem with the GWS Giants’ Wacky Wednesday scandal

Football fans have rallied around GWS Giants skipper Toby Greene after it was reported he will be hit with a massive fine following the club’s Wacky Wednesday scandal, despite not being directly involved in none of the offensive acts.

It was reported on Tuesday that the AFL is conducting an investigation into the team’s post-season party after an anonymous complaint was made about the behavior of several stars and their ‘troubled couples’ themed party wear .

The event was held in a private room in a pub and saw players from the team perform “disgusting sketches”, which reportedly included the use of a blow-up doll and a shocking joke about disgraced rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs.

Up to six players who were allegedly involved in the skits are understood to be facing suspensions or fines.

Some team members dressed up as former NRL player Jarryd Hayne and Australian NBA star Josh Giddey for the event.

Hayne had a rape conviction overturned this year and Giddey was not charged by police over allegations he had an inappropriate relationship with an underage girl.

It is claimed that other players dressed as the towers of the World Trade Center.

Green, who dressed up as Olympic break dancer Rachael ‘Raygun’ Gunn but is not accused of taking part in any of the offensive costumes or schemes, faces a $20,000 fine for failing to lead the event

Footy fans have been shocked by the decision to ban Greene and have taken to social media to vent their anger and disbelief.

“How can Toby Greene be fined 20k for being the captain and ‘not showing proper leadership in the situation’. They are big men but they shouldn’t be told how to behave,” posted a fan on X .

‘$20,000 and he didn’t even do anything! Wow, I sure wish I was back in the good old days! wrote another.

“Why does anyone, especially the AFL, care that Toby Greene wore ‘RayGun’? He literally embarrassed Australia in what he did, if you can’t recognize that, you’re as delusional as the AFL,” he post a third party.

Another posted: “AFL didn’t hit 2024 budget for Toby Greene fines this year so they fine him $20k for…cheques notes…Dressing like Raygun. A new low for Toby Greene’s tax.

On Thursday morning, Greene’s manager Paul Connors said the GWS skipper accepted he “had to do better” after news of the scandal broke.

“Toby accepts that he is the leader of the club and that he needed to be better,” Connors said.

“But besides, I had as much interest in being that Mad Monday as you. I had lost a game by 44 points.

“I was emotionally drained and couldn’t think about anything.

“So yes, Toby accepts that he could have done things better, but then again, it’s up to others to debate whether $20,000 is too much.”

After sharing the captaincy duties with Stephen Coniglio and Josh Kelly in 2022, Greene was announced as the club’s sole captain by manager Adam Kingsley in 2023, having played for the club for 13 seasons.

Channel Nine’s Tom Morris has claimed that Josh Fahey, whose contract expired this season, is understood to be one of six players allegedly involved in the skits.

He added that Isaac Cumming and James Peatling are understood not to have been involved.

Coaches and staff are understood to have been at the venue earlier in the evening but had left before the offensive skits took place.

On Monday, Morris wrote to X: “One young player in particular, who is said to have made an ill-informed joke about P. Diddy, is set for the harshest suspension.”

“A couple of players did a parody of a movie, one player who will be fined quite significantly dressed up as Rachael ‘Raygun’ Gunn.

“I can’t imagine this player getting fined for wearing Raygun, but who knows what actions this player took.”

American rapper Combs is currently in jail awaiting trial for sex trafficking.

Morris added the club had learned of the scandal weeks ago, with some stars also finding out a weekend before the AFL Grand Final.

The GWS Giants released a statement on Wednesday which read: “The Giants confirmed yesterday that the club is aware of allegations of inappropriate behavior at the players’ end of season event last month.

“The club is taking the matter very seriously and acted quickly after receiving the concerns.

“All parties have co-operated fully with the AFL to ensure the allegations are fully investigated,” the statement said.

“Some of the allegations are distressing and completely contrary to the club’s values and policies.”
