(WXYZ) — Early voting will begin in the state of Michigan on Saturday, October 26th for the November 5th general election.

Under Proposition 2 passed in 2022, Michigan communities must have at least nine consecutive in-person voting days for elections, but communities can add more days. That means the latest early voting can begin in the state is Saturday, October 26. It will run until the Sunday before Election Day, November 3.

Early voting has already begun in three Michigan cities and towns – Detroit, East Lansing and Canton Township.

Early voting begins in Michigan this weekend

Under this change, voters can vote before Election Day in an experience similar to voting on Election Day. Voters receive ballots and can then enter their ballot directly into a tab at an early voting location.

Anyone registered in Michigan to vote has the right to vote early in person at an early voting site.

Voters can search for their assigned early voting site or sites up to 60 days before the election on the state’s voter information website.

Hours vary by location, but early voting must be offered for at least nine consecutive days, beginning on the second Saturday before the election and ending on the Sunday before the election, for eight hours a day.

How are the ballots organized and kept?

The Michigan Department of State breaks down information about how early voting ballots are organized after they are sent.

According to the state, on Election Day, ballots at a polling place are stored by polling places, and although many early voting places may have multiple precincts, the tabulators at the early voting places are programmed to count the ballots from different sections and to record the results by each. individual percentages.

“All ballots cast in Michigan, whether at an early voting location, polling place or absentee voting, are retained and available for review during the post-election research, recount and audit processes,” the state said .
