Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid reveals a very unusual fear

Connor McDavid is often talked about as a heroic figure for the Edmonton Oilers. It has reached a state of impossibility reminiscent of another great one in Edmonton. Understandably so, he’s the ultimate NHL superstar, scoring at will and putting up numbers the league has never seen in this modern age of the salary cap.

But even the Oilers superstar has his kryptonite. Speaking after the team’s first win of the season, former NHLer and now commentator PK Subban asked McDavid a pointed question: Are you afraid of ketchup?

Yes, you read that right. Connor McDavid, the best player in the NHL, has a phobia of one of the most popular condiments in the world. Subban brought up the topic with McDavid after the game.

“What if you’re afraid of ketchup?” Subban asked.

“Ketchup is a funny thing,” McDavid replied. “My brother and I grew up that way. It’s more of a phobia. I wish I could tell you more. I don’t know why that is.”

Subban was surprised by the response, but made sure to acknowledge that McDavid’s phobia might not be the worst of it. In fact, he thinks the rest of the league would trade it for the production McDavid routinely does.

“I think I share on behalf of the entire NHL,” Subban said. “There are about 700 players who would like the same phobia.”

McDavid is closing in on 1,000 points in just his 10th NHL season. With 649 games under his belt, he is sitting at 986 career points. When he registers 14 more, he will reach the 1,000-point mark in the fifth-fastest fashion in league history. No wonder Subban and the rest of the league are so curious about the little details and phobias of the best player in the world. Whatever McDavid is doing, it’s seriously working.
