NCCE engages youth from Gambaga to counter violent extremism

Gambaga (U/E), November 2, GNA – The Mamprusi East Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the North East Region has engaged youth groups in Gambaga as part of efforts to prevent and limit extremism violently by promoting social cohesion.

Groups of young people, drawn from different communities, were taken through peaceful coexistence and interfaith tolerance, triggers and effects of violent extremism, radicalization and the impact of disinformation, and ways they could resist and resist the call of terrorism.

The youth involvement was part of the European Union (EU) sponsored project called “Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE),” being implemented by the NCCE in the five Northern regions and three other adjacent regions.

It aimed to increase youth understanding of peacebuilding mechanisms, social cohesion, community mechanisms, including identifying early warning signs and community-based strategies to combat arms proliferation.

Addressing the media on the sidelines of the engagement, Mr. Abdulai Abdul Mugis, the Mamprusi East Municipal Director of the NCCE, said it is important to inculcate the spirit of patriotism and civic responsibility in the youth and invoke the sense of belonging to their own immediate. community.

This, Mr. Mugis indicated, would enable them to understand the negative consequences of joining violent extremist groups and appreciate the legal framework that prohibits the activities of violent extremists and terrorist groups and become ambassadors of peace.

Mr Issah Iddrisu, a representative of the Gambaga Bureau of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), urged the youths to beware of being used by violent extremists.

He said the security services need information to function and the support of the youths in helping them with the necessary information will enable them tackle various crimes in the area for peaceful coexistence.

Mr Ibrahim Meshanu, an educationist, urged the youths to use non-violent means to address their grievances and not engage in activities that would fuel violent extremism in the area to aggravate their plight.
